Representatives from Algeria, Israel, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia gathered with some 100 participants representing ministries of Council of Europe member States, civil society, international organisations, practitioners and academics at the Council of Europe’s Conference on Smuggling of Migrants held on 23 June 2017 in Strasbourg.
The main objective of the Conference was to encourage debate and recommendations with the view of developing strategies to thwart the smuggling of migrants. The Conference, at its utmost ambitions, was also aimed at laying the groundwork for the development of a new Convention on the issue.
Working alongside their European counterparts, the Southern Mediterranean representatives took part in the identification of ways to exchange knowledge, develop strategies for cooperation and agree on the strategic goals to prevent the smuggling of migrants.
