The second module of the Programme for advanced training in the field of human rights (PATHS) devoted to the “Introduction to the European Convention on Human Rights and other international systems for the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms” was organised in Strasbourg from 23 to 26 May 2016.
PATHS is a regional initiative organised in the framework of the South Programme II. Around 30 participants from the Southern Mediterranean had the opportunity to debate and exchange on the human rights protection in the international and European legal systems.
The participants ranging from national experts to lawyers and other human rights professionals analysed the European Convention on Human Rights provisions as one of the cornerstones in the field of protection of human rights, the Parties’ obligations and the Convention’s provisions and protocols: for instance on issues like death penalty, freedom of expression, prohibition of torture, forced labor and slavery, non-discrimination and administration of justice.
This regional training served the ultimate goal to contribute to the promotion of human rights standards across the Southern Mediterranean and the alignment of national procedural standards to the Convention’s provisions.
Through various case studies the participants have deepened their knowledge in the field of international systems of human rights protection and their implication at national level. They also had the opportunity to discuss the current challenges of the Southern Mediterranean countries in the field of human rights with Council of Europe high officials and Ambassadors and to attend a hearing at the European Court of Human rights.
