Training for future Moroccan legal practitioners on trafficking in human beings

The training of about fifty future Moroccan legal practioners in the field of combating human trafficking took place during a workshop organised on 28-29 March within the framework of the South Programme IV, in cooperation with the National Commission for Coordinating Measures for Combating and Preventing Trafficking in Human Beings of Morocco and the juridic clinic of Caddi Ayyad University of Marrakesh, which provides free legal aid to potential victims of trafficking.

National and international experts presented key concepts related to human trafficking, the national and international juridic frameworks in the area including the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings, as well as the compendium of legal summaries and decisions of the European court of human rights (Arabic and French). Practical exercises simulating human trafficking case trial, as well as exercises aimed at the detection of potential victims of trafficking were also organised for the participants.

The event ended with the award of a certificate to the participants by members of the National Commission for Coordinating Measures for Combating and Preventing Trafficking in Human Beings of Morocco and representatives of the Council of Europe.

The event took place in the premises of the Caddi Ayyad University of Marrakesh in the presence of Mr Hicham Mellati, President of the Commission, Mr Moulay Lhassan Hbid, President of the Cadi Ayyad University, Mr Abdelkarim Taleb, Chair of the Faculty of legal, economic and social sciences of the Marrakesh University, and Mr Zakariya Khalil, Member of the Juridic Clinic and private law Professor of the Faculty.

The Council of Europe remains at the disposal of the beneficiaries of the South Programme IV to further promote the sharing of such national experiences through regional cooperation in the area of trafficking in human beings. It should be recalled that the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings is open to accession by non-member States of the Organisation.
