Back Harmonisation of the Libyan legislative and institutional framework with international standards

Protection of personal data
Harmonisation of the Libyan legislative and institutional framework with international standards

The Council of Europe, the Libyan National Council for Fundamental Freedoms and the Libyan parliament organised on 9-10 October 2023 in tunis, a reflection workshop to assess Libya's needs in terms of personal data protection. The participants and the experts developed a draft operational action plan for the evaluation of personal data protection in Libya.

This reflection workshop was also an opportunity to present the joint programme supporting the activity, which is in its fifth phase and is known as “South V Program”, intended for the southern Mediterranean countries, and more particularly its component relating to the protection of personal data, which aims to create a common legal space between Europe and the South Mediterranean region and provide support to the governments to promote regulations in line with the international standards guaranteed by Convention 108 +.

This initiative is a follow-up to the regional event organised in June 2022 in collaboration with the Tunisian Authority for the Protection of Personal Data and the League of Arab States, during which interest was expressed for support towards enhancing personal data protection at different levels: awareness raising among the population, among decision makers; legal development and empowerment, etc.

The project will enable beneficiaries to develop and deepen their personal data protection frameworks and provide a regional forum for the exchange of information and best practices between beneficiaries.

The South Programme V is a joint programme of the Council of Europe and the European Union, financed by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe.
