Brief desciption of the resource/practice:
- What’s the Award “Mérite Elsy Jacobs”?
The award is rewarding every year volunteers for their actions and commitment to gender equality in sport.
In addition to a trophy, the award also offers a prize money endowed with 1,500 EUR.
The award was initiated in 2009 by the “Sport&Leisure Club SaF Zéisseng” who‘s focus lies on cycling an rewarded a national laureate in tribute to the Luxembourg cyclist Elsy Jacobs, world champion in 1958.
Since 2023 the award is organized by the non-profit association “Mérite Elsy Jacobs” in partnership with the City of Luxembourg and is recompensing national and local laureates.
- What are the objectives of the Award?
- Promoting gender equality in sport (combatting stereotypes and inequalities)
- Encouraging and supporting women’s sport (by motivating other actors in the sports sector)
- Improving visibility of women in sport (awareness rising of public, actors and media)
- What are the determination procedures?
The administration board of the Mérite Elsy Jacobs Association is leading the current affairs (e.a. the subsidy of the City of Luxembourg).
The jury of the Mérite Elsy Jacobs determines the laureates by voting and the jurors are nominated by the administration board. The jury is composed of 13 personalities as former laureates, former national sportspeople, politicians, representatives of the City of Luxembourg and members of SaF Zéisseng.
The selection criteria are:
Finding Volunteers which have distinguished themselves specially in promoting women’s sport. It’s not requested, that the person herself must be a sportsman/woman or have produced international or national champions.
