Brief desciption of the resource/practice:

In application of European directive 2010/13/EU, certain events may be included by decree in the list of “events of major importance”, and must then be made available on a free-to-air television service, so that the greatest possible number of people can enjoy them.

This list, unchanged since a 2004 decree, no longer reflected developments in French sport and no longer met the expectations of viewers, 80% of whom said they wanted to see more women's sport. The Ministries of Culture and Sport therefore drew up an extended and modernized list of events qualifying as “major” in order to meet the challenges of representativeness, inclusion and diversity of French sport.

The inclusion of a large number of women's competitions and the Paralympic Games on the new list is a crucial step forward in anchoring and protecting the broadcasting of these sporting events, which until now have lacked visibility.

In order to combat prejudice as much as to develop the practice of sport and feminize the sporting movement, women's meetings and competitions have been added to the list of events already considered to be of major importance in soccer, rugby, tennis, cycling, basketball and handball, so that everyone can follow the matches of our female champions.

Handisport is now given its rightful place: the Summer and Winter Paralympic Games have been added to the list of events of major importance. The visibility now given to para-athletes will help to highlight their talent and meet the challenge of inclusion through sport.

Finally, the existing list has also been extended to include new disciplines to better reflect their popularity. The semi-finals and finals of the men's and women's European and World Volleyball Championships, when the French team is taking part, will now be accessible to all, as will the Alpine Skiing World Championships, when the competition is held in France.

The list of events of major importance to France is now the longest in the European Union, demonstrating the central place we attach to sport in our country, and to the promotion of its values.
