The main objective of Balance in Sport in 2016 was to set up a corpus of gender equality indicators and to provide guidance on how to use these.

This set of indicators shall be used by different institutions and organisations interested in promoting and implementing gender equality.

This project covered 5 fields and aimed at:

  • mapping the current situation of women’s participation in sport at all levels including in leadership and in coaching;
  • charting the portrayal of women athletes in the media;
  • researching and highlighting the prevalence of gender-based violence in sports

Another objective was to develop tools to facilitate the use of pre-determined indicators by public authorities in charge of sport and sport organisations. To that end a pilot data collection campaign was launched by using the set of indicators and the online tool.

This project aimed at paving the way for defining relevant sport and gender policies to achieve gender balance in sport.
