Tajikistan: Roundtable discussion on combating domestic violence and violence against women with civil society organisations

Organised in the framework of the Central Asia Rule of Law Programme on 2 December 2022 in Dushanbe, the roundtable gathered around 12 representatives of Tajik civil society organisations (CSOs). The roundtable served to discuss the challenges they face in their work in Tajikistan to prevent and combat violence against women and to learn best practices from the countries that signed the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention).

The comprehensive presentation of a Council of Europe expert set out the key features and benefits of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention). She put emphasis on several challenges and strategies employed by CSOs working in States parties to the Convention which could be useful inspiration for fieldwork in Tajikistan. In particular, they could be used when providing shelter, legal advice, medical or psychological counselling to victims, and also in supporting co-operation with state authorities and awareness raising efforts.

The discussions offered also a first opportunity to learn more about the situation in Tajikistan as regards women’s rights and domestic violence and identify how the Council of Europe can assist further in line with its mandate and within the framework of the Central Asia Rule of Law Programme.

This round table was held in parallel to the conference “Mechanisms for ensuring human rights protection in Tajikistan in the light of European and international standards organised on 1 December in Dushanbe.
