Tajikistan : Roundtable discussion on combating domestic violence and violence against women with civil society organisations

Organised in the framework of the Central Asia Rule of Law Programme on 2 December 2022 in Dushanbe , the roundtable gathered 12 representatives of Tajik civil society organisations (CSOs). They discussed the challenges they face in their daily work in Tajikistan to prevent and combat violence against women and got familiar with best practices from the States parties to the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention).

The comprehensive presentation of a Council of Europe expert set out the key features and benefits of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention). The expert gave emphasis to several challenges and strategies employed by CSOs working in other countries which could be useful inspiration for fieldwork in Tajikistan. The exchanges focused on such issues as providing shelter, legal advice, medical or psychological counselling to victims, enhancing co-operation with law enforcement bodies and health services and supporting awareness raising efforts.

This event also offered a unique opportunity to learn more about the situation in Tajikistan as regards women’s rights and domestic violence and to identify how the Council of Europe could assist further in line with its mandate and within the framework of the Central Asia Rule of Law Programme.

This round table was held in parallel to the conference “Mechanisms for ensuring human rights protection in Tajikistan in the light of European and international standards" organised on 1 December in Dushanbe.

Useful tools for civil society organisations developed by the Council of Europe

The round table was organised within the framework of the Central Asia Rule of Law Programme 2020-2023 which is a joint initiative, co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe.
