Strengthening institutional response to antigypsyism through targeted capacity-building in North Macedonia

As part of the European Union and Council of Europe Joint Programme Roma Integration – Phase III, a series of targeted trainings on anti-discrimination and combating antigypsyism were delivered in North Macedonia between February and March 2026, contributing to strengthened institutional awareness and capacities among key public service providers.

Approximately 150 public officials participated in these activities, including staff from Centres for Social Work, as well as primary and secondary school teachers. The trainings focused on understanding antigypsyism as a specific form of racism, promoting equality and non-discrimination, and applying inclusive approaches in daily professional practice.

Through interactive sessions and practical case-based discussions, participants enhanced their ability to recognise and address discriminatory practices, while reinforcing their role in ensuring equitable access to services for Roma communities. The activities also supported the integration of human rights principles into institutional responses, contributing to more inclusive and responsive service delivery.

These efforts represent an important step towards mainstreaming equality principles across key sectors and fostering a more enabling environment for Roma inclusion in North Macedonia.

The activities were implemented within the framework of the joint European Union and Council of Europe programme Roma Integration – Phase III and Cabinet of the Minister without portfolio, in charge of integration and implementation of the Strategy for the inclusion of Roma 2022-2030.
