Brief description of the practice: The representation of women in the governing bodies of sport federations is strengthened by the provisions of the French legislation No. 2014-873 of 4 August 2014 for substantive equality between women and men. Article 63 of this legislation amends the French “Sport Code” to introduce a move towards parity in the procedures for appointing representatives to the governance bodies of approved sport federations. The principle of increasing the representation of women in sport governing bodies must be set out in the statute of the sport federations and must follow the progressive and proportionate system which is provided. The law imposes a relative parity system: 40% for sports federations that issue more than 25% of their memberships to one of the two genders. The other federations are on a 25% system for each of the two genders The deadline for the compliance upgrade was 30 June 2018. However, there is no system for penalising in cases where sport federations do not fulfil these requirements.
