Members of the Tunisian and (future) Moroccan National Preventive Mechanisms (NPM) against torture participated in the launching of the EU Network of NPMs held on 4-5 April 2017 in Strasbourg.
This first working meeting of the Network was attended by representatives of the European NPMs alongside major international and regional bodies such as the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (SPT), the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT), the newly established Independent NPM Observatory (NPM Obs) and the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI).
As observers to the Network, the representatives of the Tunisian National Authority for the Prevention of Torture (INPT) and the Moroccan National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) were enabled to take actively part in discussions relating to the mandate, methodology and the work programme of the Network and to how NPMs handle the essential tasks of reporting, making adequate recommendations to relevant authorities and ensuring their impact by engaging with a variety of stakeholders.
Access to this Network is aimed at reinforcing the capacity of the two newly established Southern Mediterranean NPMs through the sharing of experiences and best practices as well as networking.
