Promoting mediation as an alternative method for dispute resolution in the Republic of Moldova

An international conference that provided a platform for dialogue and the exchange of experiences and best practices aimed at advancing mediation as an alternative method of dispute resolution, was held on 28 and 29 May 2025, in Chisinau.

Over two days, the conference showcased the experiences of several European countries, including Italy, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Azerbaijan, in implementing mediation and examining its impact on judicial systems and justice professionals. The tools develooped by the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ) to promote mediation in the context of improving the efficiency and quality of justice, which provide a solid foundation for strengthening national mediation systems, were on the conference agenda.

A key focus of the conference was the evolution of the mediation framework in the Republic of Moldova, including future development prospects. In this context, the draft Law on mediation and the status of mediators in the Republic of Moldova was reviewed against the backdrop of CEPEJ’s relevant tools and recommendations.

Participants included representatives of international organisations, European experts, mediators, legal professionals, academics, and other justice sector stakeholders, promoting a collaborative environment for advancing mediation efforts in the Republic of Moldova.

This event is part of the European Union and Council of Europe joint programme “Partnership for Good Governance”, co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe, and implemented by the Council of Europe, in the framework of the project Support to further modernisation of court management in the Republic of Moldova”.
