GENDER QUOTAS IN THE NATIONAL SPECIAL SPORTS FEDERATIONS

Country: Sweden

Organisation responsible: The Swedish Sports Confederation

Main topic addressed: Gender equality in leadership

Type of resource/practice: Legislation, policies, standards and guidelines

Discipline: Multi-sport

Target group(s): Special sports confederations

Timing: Since 2017

Language: Swedish

Brief description of the practice: In 2017, at the annual meeting of the Swedish Sports Confederation (SSC), the statute of the SSC was modified. The change implies that the boards in the 71 national Specialised Sports Federations (SSFs) should have a gender balance in which no gender is represented by less than 40%. Similarly, in the nomination committees, the gender balance must be equal to 50-50. This new statute will enter into force in 2021. The lack of gender balance in the boards will be considered as a contravention of the statute and several actions can be taken in this case. The most extreme consequence is exclusion from the Swedish Sports Confederation but other measures, such as a reduction in financial support from the SSC, are also being considered. In 2018-2019, SSFs can apply for extra financial support for gender equality, which aims at stimulating the federations to increase their efforts in order to reach the gender equality goals and comply with the regulation that will come into force in 2021.
