Opening ceremony of the Institute for Forensic Psychiatry Sokolac

The newly refurbished Institute for Forensic Psychiatry Sokolac opened on 4 November 2014. The only facility of this type in Bosnia and Herzegovina will enable 147 staff members to provide 200 persons imposed with security measures in criminal proceedings with reinforced treatment in accordance with the European Convention on Human Rights.

Swiss authorities as the main donor of the refurbishment works (6,7 mil BAM) emphasised the excellent example of cross-jurisdictions co-operation that led to the opening of this facility after 5 years of refurbishment works.

Republika Srpska Minister of Health and Social Protection undertook to continue providing support to the management of this facility and thanked many local and international stakeholders involved thus far.

BiH Minister of Justice underlined that preconditions have finally been met for honouring commitments that BiH authorities undertook upon accession to the Council of Europe in 2002. At the same time, opening of this facility does not only imply compliance with international standards and enforcement of friendly settlement and decision of the European Court for Human Rights but also contributes to the system(s) of execution of criminal sanctions in BiH in general.
