Regional workshop addresses evolving corruption challenges in Eastern Partnership countries

A two-day regional workshop on “Best practices in the investigation and prosecution of corruption” brought together practitioners and experts from Armenia, Azerbaijan, the Republic of Moldova, and Ukraine. The event provided an opportunity to share experiences, discuss common challenges, and look at new ways to strengthening the anti-corruption efforts.

Participants exchanged examples from their day-to-day work, reflected on obstacles faced during investigations, and highlighted effective practices from their national contexts. Key discussion points included how to prioritise corruption cases, improve national investigation methods, and recover illicit assets, with financial intelligence units playing an essential role.

An important challenge raised during the discussions was the movement of illicit assets across borders and the delays that can occur when requesting international assistance. In response, the workshop offered practical solutions on how to build trust between national and international institutions and to enhance cross-border collaboration to ensure effectively freezing and confiscation of criminal proceeds.

The workshop was designed to draw on successful practices already developed within Eastern Partnership countries, supporting participants in adapting and applying these solutions in their own national settings. The exchange of experiences helped establishing direct contacts among participants, which will have an additional positive anti-corruption effect in the future.

This event is part of the European Union and the Council of Europe joint programme “Partnership for Good Governance”, co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe, and implemented by the Council of Europe, in the framework of the regional project on “Strengthening measures to prevent and combat economic crime in the Eastern Partnership region”.
