Fostering dialogue on gender based violence through an innovative approach in Azerbaijan

A café discussion on the European Court of Human Rights' case law concerning domestic violence was held in Baku. This event, the second of its kind, was organised during the “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence”.

The event served as a platform for meaningful dialogue and exchange, aiming to inspire action and raise awareness on this critical issue. It brought together 34 representatives of civil society, judges, legal professionals, and youth from the country, fostering an informal yet impactful exchange of ideas. Attendees shared insights and experiences, focusing on promoting gender equality and increasing awareness of international standards to address domestic violence effectively.

Judge Latif Huseynov of the European Court of Human Rights presented the issue of domestic violence through practical examples from the European Court of Human Rights case law. He highlighted its classification as a human rights and anti-discrimination issue, detailing state obligations to prevent and combat violence, safeguard women’s physical integrity, and align with current international standards.

Participants contributed with personal stories and collectively advocated for a society committed to zero tolerance for violence against women. The event underscored the importance of collective efforts in building awareness and fostering systemic change to combat domestic violence.
