European standards on minorities’ protection at the centre of a training for legal professionals in the Republic of Moldova

A two-day tailor-made training was organised in co-operation with the National Institute of Justice for 63 legal professionals from judicial institutions in the Republic of Moldova. The aim of the training was to enhance their knowledge and understanding of European standards on the protection of on ethnic, linguistic and sexual minorities, and for ensuring better access to justice for vulnerable persons.

Exchanges between the participants provided the opportunity to discuss the newest legal developments and ways to improve the legal redress in the Republic of Moldova, in line with the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights, and based on the recent Recommendation of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers on combating hate speech,  as well as other relevant standards and best practices in the field.

It was concluded that there is a need to establish a practice of systematic discussions on this subject in the Republic of Moldova, to update relevant actors on the standards and on the latest jurisprudence regularly, at the benefit of the vulnerable citizens in the country.

This event is part of the European Union and Council of Europe joint programme “Partnership for Good Governance”, co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe, and implemented by the Council of Europe, in the framework of the project “Combating discrimination, hate speech and hate crimes in the Republic of Moldova”.
