Armenian civil society and the Council of Europe collaborate on judicial reform progress

A round-table brought together Armenian civil society organisations (CSOs) to evaluate the progress of the country’s 2022-2026 Strategy for Judicial and Legal Reforms. This strategy is vital for ensuring a more transparent, efficient, and accountable justice system.

Discussions between CSO representatives and the Council of Europe provided a platform to review accomplishments, challenges, and lessons learned while setting priorities for the remaining implementation period of the country’s Strategy for Judicial and Legal Reforms. These discussions addressed key areas, including ongoing criminal justice reforms, reform of the civil and administrative legislation, and the development of alternative dispute resolution mechanism to reduce the needs of trials.

The involvement of CSOs in Armenia’s crucial justice reforms remains important through the Council of Europe’s work, including the preparation of Venice Commission Opinions that aim to strengthen judicial independence and accountability.

Insights and recommendations from this round-table are particularly significant as Armenia reaches the midpoint of its 2022-2026 Strategy for Judicial and Legal Reforms. These contributions will help shape the next steps in establishing a more efficient, transparent, and accountable judicial system for the benefit of citizens in Armenia.

This activity is part of the European Union and Council of Europe joint programme “Partnership for Good Governance”, co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe, and implemented by the Council of Europe, in the framework of the project “Support to the Justice Reform in Armenia”.
