The European Union and the Council of Europe continue supporting domestic reforms on the path of EU integration for the Republic of Moldova through the Partnership for Good Governance

The European Union and the Council of Europe support the authorities of the Republic of Moldova in the implementation of domestic reforms of importance to the EU integration path of the country and to the benefit of its citizens.

The second Local Steering Committee meeting in the Republic of Moldova, organised in the framework of the EU/Council of Europe joint programme Partnership for Good Governance, aimed at presenting and taking stock of the results of implementation of country specific and regional projects achieved in 2023, exchanging ideas and discussing priorities for 2024.

After one year of implementation “the Partnership for Good Governance is providing tangible and results-oriented support to the national authorities of the Republic of Moldova in the implementation of key reforms in line with European standards in the areas of strengthening justice, fighting economic crime, combating discrimination, promoting gender equality and advancing women’s access to justice”, stated Claus Neukirch, Director of Programme Co-ordination of the Council of Europe.

The joint programme Partnership for Good Governance “is expected to have a direct impact on Moldova’s path towards EU accession, in particular as regards Chapter 23 Judiciary and Fundamental Rights as well as anti-corruption and the fight against money laundering.” stated H.E Jānis Mažeiks, Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova.

“In order to achieve an inclusive society, there is a need for resilient institutions and the Partnership for Good Governance is providing an important contribution in strengthening the institutional capacities to cope with challenges at the national and regional level.” mentioned H.E  Tatiana Pârvu, Ambassador at large, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova, PGG National Co-ordinator. Representatives of beneficiary institutions acknowledged the important role of the Programme to address emerging needs of the national partners.

Three country-specific projects are implemented in the Republic of Moldova, with a total budget of 1.7 million euros, co-funded by the EU and the Council of Europe. The projects build on the results of the previous phases and continue aiming at combating discrimination, hate speech and hate crime, combating economic crime and further strengthening justice.

At regional level, three projects will be implemented in Eastern Partnership countries, including the Republic of Moldova. The regional projects aim at fighting economic crime, promoting equality and non-discrimination, and advancing women’s access to justice. Their purpose is to encourage networking, provide a platform for sharing lessons learned and best practices, and, where relevant, complement country-specific projects. An added value of the work done at regional level in the framework of the Partnership for Good Governance, is the synergies and cross-fertilisation with other regional programmes such as the EU/Council of Europe joint programme Horizontal Facility.

The Partnership for Good Governance is a joint co-operation initiative of the European Union and the Council of Europe for strengthening good governance in the Eastern Partnership region, co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe, and implemented by the Council of Europe.

The Partnership for Good Governance provides tailor-made support to beneficiary countries to meet their reform agendas and comply with the European standards in the fields of human rights, rule of law and democracy. This is also a priority for the EU enlargement process, as relevant for the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine’s candidate status and Georgia’s European perspective.
