The Council of Europe and the European Union Delegation presented the state of implementation of the joint projects in Armenia in 2021 and the PGG activities planned for 2022

The European Union and Council of Europe joint programme Partnership for Good Governance II 2019-2022 (the PGG) held the third Steering Committee meeting for Armenia on Friday 25 March in online format. The aim of the meeting was to present the state of implementation and the results of the programme and discuss plans for 2022.

During the meeting, participants assessed the results  of the work carried out by the PGG projects (country specific and regional) during the past year and discussed the activities planned for 2022 in the field of judicial reform, combating corruption and discrimination.

The programme is implementing two country specific projects in Armenia for the period 2019-2022 with a total budget of 2.6 million euros.

These projects assist the country’s authorities to strengthen institutional capacities to fight and prevent corruption as well as to implement judicial reforms, through two components: 1) by enhancing the independence and professionalism of the judiciary and 2) by supporting the criminal justice reform and harmonising the application of European standards in Armenia.

In addition to these country-specific projects, Armenia is also taking part in four regional projects aimed at strengthening measures to prevent and combat economic crime, strengthening the profession of lawyers, combating discrimination and facilitating access of women to justice with a total budget of 3.7 million euros.

The European Union provides 80% of the funding for these projects, whilst the Council of Europe provides 20% and is in charge of their implementation.

Frank Hess, Head of Co-operation, Delegation of the European Union to Armenia, Kristine Stepanyan, Desk Officer, European Union division, European Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, PGG National Coordinator, and Delphine Freymann, Head of the Programming Department a.i., Office of the Directorate General of Programmes, Council of Europe opened the meeting.
