Raising awareness on combating violence against women among law-enforcement officials and judges in Azerbaijan

Police officers, judges, and representatives of local executive authorities in Azerrbaijan, participated in two sessions on international standards for combating violence against women and domestic violence especially looking at protection orders for victims. Protection order for victims of violence against women and domestic violence are a crucial tool to ensure their protection when such violence happens and to prevent recurrent violence.

International standards and best practices on protection orders were presented during these sessions. Based on a needs assessment for Azerbaijan, in light of its international obligations and drawing from international best practices, recommendations regarding the improvement of national legislation and practice on issuing protection orders were presented.

Participants took an active part in discussions, exchanged ideas and shared their professional experience. All participants agreed that as police officers are professionals in the first line providing protection to victims, they should be entrusted with issuing short-term protection orders.
