New PGGII project: Raising awareness of the Istanbul Convention and other gender equality standards in Azerbaijan

A new PGGII project was launched in July 2020 in Azerbaijan, under the title “Raising awareness of the Istanbul Convention and other gender equality standards in Azerbaijan”. This is a joint action between European Union and the Council of Europe, and it will run until December 2021.

This project aims to raise awareness on the Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention) and other gender equality standards in Azerbaijan. The Istanbul Convention is widely recognised as one of the main legal standards and the most comprehensive international treaty to tackle violence against women and domestic violence (VAW/DV), which is a serious violation of the human rights of women.

The project will co-operate with the Azerbaijani authorities through three main fields of action: legislative and policy framework gap analysis, awareness-raising activities at different levels and capacity-building of relevant stakeholders on VAW/DV and international standards. In addition, this project will aim to provide support to the Azerbaijani authorities in their path towards signature and ratification of the Istanbul Convention.

Project partners include the State Committee on Family, Women and Children Affairs, the Ombudsperson’s Office, the Ministry of Justice, the Academy of Justice and the Faculty of Law at Baku State University.
