An online workshop was held on 17 October 2022 to map the state of play of hate speech in sport in Greece and Spain, in view of the preparation of the countries’ national strategies and the #SportSpreadsRespect national campaigns

The project’s approach is a 4-step strategy: data gathering and exchange of good practices, provision of guidance towards the adoption of national strategies, design and implementation of a national capacity-building campaign and, lastly, the creation of an online resource centre providing access to existing tools to combat hate speech where suitable measures to intervene, counteract, report and overcome hate speech in sport are identified, both rooted in instruments such as the No Hate Speech Movement campaign, the Council of Europe Gender Equality Strategy, the work of the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS) and other relevant tools.

In this initial data gathering exercise, the project’s national coordinators from Greece, George Mavrotas and Spain, Raúl Rodríguez Porras, presented their findings in the shape of country factsheets, to then exchange good practices in preparation of their respective national strategies.

The discussions, facilitated by Rosario Coco, Project Manager at the Outsport Network, trainer for Gaynet and activist in the field of SOGIESC issues, also welcomed the feedback of experts in the field of hate speech in sport, such as Bàlint Jósa, Board member of Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) Network, member of the EPAS Consultative Committee and Laszlo Foldi, international expert.

The "Combating Hate Speech in Sport" joint project is co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe.
