"Active and Equal: Women's health in sport across generations" is the first Europe-wide initiative dedicated to advancing women’s health and equality in sport. Co-financed by the European Union and the Council of Europe and running from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2027, the project addresses long-ignored barriers that limit girls' and women's participation. Its goal is to create safe, stigma-free sport environments where women thrive at every stage of life.
Background

Gender equality is a strategic priority for the Council of Europe’s Sport Division, anchored in its 2015 Recommendation on gender mainstreaming in sport. Through initiatives like the joint European Union – Council of Europe "All In Plus", the Division has advanced tools, data and policy support to help countries address persistent gender gaps. Active and Equal builds on this foundation, placing women’s health at the centre of the gender equality agenda in sport.
