Strengthening co-operation between the Council of Europe and the League of Arab States

In the framework of the long-standing relations between the Council of Europe (CoE) and the League of Arab States (LAS), a delegation led by the Deputy Secretary General of the League of Arab States, the President of the League’s Centre in Tunis and the Director of the Human Rights Department, participated in a study visit to Strasbourg on 27-29 September 2022.

This initiative aimed at presenting the Council of Europe's key instruments and areas of expertise, with a focus on the European Court of Human Rights, the international court with jurisdiction to rule on individual or state applications alleging violations of the civil and political rights set out in the European Convention on Human Rights.

Organised in the framework of the joint EU-Council of Europe Programme "Protecting human rights, the rule of law and democracy through shared standards in the Southern Mediterranean" (South Programme V), represents a privileged opportunity to strengthen co-operation between the two institutions, in accordance with the priorities of common interest identified and on the basis of the common values shared, thus contributing to the creation of a common legal space and a better understanding of the European system and mechanisms for the protection of human rights.

The South Programme V is a joint programme of the Council of Europe and the European Union, financed by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe.
