A theatre play as a less conventional way to address violence against women

The theatre play "Night of Tribades" was performed in Podgorica on 30 May and a day later in Tivat, bringing great media and public attention. The goal of this artistic project is the affirmation of the struggle for true equality between women and men, and emancipation of women in Montenegrin society.

A less conventional, but more interactive and engaging manner to address the issue of violence against women through artistic and creative forms, is a theatre play”, said Evgenia Giakoumopoulou, Head of Operations of the Council of Europe Programme Office in Podgorica at the press conference organised to announce the premiere of the play. The play is a part of a broader information campaign #TellTheWholeStory aimed at raising the awareness of victims on the rights they have and the available mechanisms for their protection.

All persons involved in the creation of the play "Night of the Tribades" believe in the power that theatrical art has in awakening empathy and shifting awareness in a society. This multi-layered play puts forth in an original way questions concerning the equality of women, their position in society, freedom of choice and emancipation. In the coming weeks, the play will be performed in other Montenegrin towns.

The play also has a strong humanitarian dimension. Instead of the usual ticket purchase, the audience is encouraged to donate the amount of their choice, and the entirety of the collected funds will, in close co-operation with the partners from Women’s Rights Centre and SoS Line Podgorica, be distributed in such a manner so as to provide support where it is most urgently needed.

Thus, everyone who attends the performance of " Night of the Tribades" will contribute to the fight against domestic violence. The range of support will very much depend on the funds collected, thus a wide audience is encouraged to not only enjoy the artistic performance but also to contribute to the ultimate goal of encouraging women to #TellTheWholeStory.

The play is being realised through the co-operation among the European Union and the Council of Europe joint programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022”, Faculty of Law and Faculty of Dramatic Arts (University of Montenegro), the Centre for Culture Tivat and the NGO Youth Theatre.
