Meeting of the representatives of the EU/CoE joint Project “Consolidation of Justice Sector Policy Development in Ukraine” with Deputies Rector of the National School of Judges

 

The representatives of the EU/CoE joint Project “Consolidation of Justice Sector Policy Development in Ukraine” held a meeting with the Deputies Rector of the National School of Judges Mr. Volodymyr Masurok and Mr. Anatolii Kostenko.

Ms. Olena Trapeznikova, the Senior Project Officer informed about the main areas of activities of the Project: providing support to activities and ensuring implementation of the Council of Europe standards in the course of the justice sector reform and promoting dialogue between the Council of Europe and Ukraine by providing feedback to the Council of Europe monitoring bodies on the progress of the reform.

The priority areas of cooperation, particularly, providing expert support by the Project were discussed. The separate topic for discussion was communication weaknesses of judiciary and measures, which are necessary to be taken to restore trust in justice and its credibility. The representatives of the National School of Judges pointed out, that effective communication between judiciary and public and media is essential in this process.  

The capacity building need of judiciary, the areas for cooperation with involvement of leading European experts, joint development of programs and conduction of trainings were broadly discussed.

During the meeting it was pointed out, that it is very important for education of judiciary to be acquainted with European legal opinion on issues concerning regular and qualification evaluation of judges, the methodology of selection of candidates for the position of judges, other areas of justice scientific and methodological support.
