Visit of ICCROM expert: sharing experience in urban conservation between Georgia’s historic towns

On 28-29 March Professor Jukka Jokilehto, ICCROM expert in urban conservation visited Georgia in scopes of the collaboration between National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia and ICCROM.

The aim of the mission was to assess the urban rehabilitation works already carried out/ planned in different historic towns of Georgia (Tbilisi, Sighnaghi, Telavi, Dusheti) and to set up recommendations for improvement of urban rehabilitation management and practice, with particular focus on improving education in this field.

The visit created unique possibility to share experiences among different historic towns: the representatives of Dusheti municipality joined Dr. Jokilehto in Telavi to discuss with local representatives and specialists the successes and failures of the rehabilitation works carried out in Telavi over the past years.

On 30th March Dr. Jokilehto was welcomed to Dusheti by the governor Vazha Chokheli, COMUS local team and stakeholders to present COMUS methodology and the planned interventions.  Dr. Jokilehto admitted the ultimate importance of the local community involvement in heritage planning as a key condition for successful rehabilitation. The official report and recommendations of Dr. Jokilehto’s visit will be sent in the following weeks.
