On 2-3 March 2017 the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Armenia in cooperation with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JAICA) organized a two-day workshop on “Protection of Armenian Historic and Cultural Heritage and the Role of Communities in It” with participation of representatives from several historic towns. The workshop was organized in the framework of Small Granting Scheme for JICA Alumnus and Community-Led Urban Strategies in Historic Towns (COMUS) Projects.

During the workshop current challenges of preservation, restoration and promotion of heritage in Armenia, heritage protection legislative framework improvement and also issues on sustainable tourism and territorial development were discussed.

During the workshop JICA Alumni and COMUS National Coordinator Gohar Grigoryan presented current international cooperation projects at the Ministry of Culture. COMUS Project Officer Sarhat Petrosyan introduced how COMUS managed to integrate local communities into urban strategic decision making process and how it influenced actual policies. As both COMUS Pilot Town PIU managers Hovhannes Sahakyan from Gyumri and Hayarpi Avanesyan from Goris were among participants, a discussion on how COMUS methodology can be implemented in other historic towns of Armenia as successfully as it was in the case of Gyumri and Goris was held.
