Albanian authorities renew commitment to promote freedom of expression and the media

Albanian public authorities expressed their commitment to collaborate and advance their institutional agendas in an effort to improve the environment of freedom of expression (FoE) and the media in the country.

Representatives from key beneficiaries and relevant partner institutions ensured to further advance the collaboration with the joint European Union and Council of Europe action on ‘Promoting Freedom of Expression and of the Media in Albania’ (PRO-FREX-A) during the 1st Steering Committee meeting of Horizontal Facility programme, Phase III (2023-2026).

The Action will continue its partnership with the School of Magistrates, the Bar Association, State Police Directorate, and Audio-Visual Media Authority to improve the environment for the exercise of freedom of expression and the media in line with European standards especially in the context of advancing of negotiation with EU of Albania’s accession.

The focus areas are based on three pillars: training the judiciary and law enforcement in European standards of Article 10 of the European Convention of Human rights, supporting the Audio-Visual Media Authority in strengthening their efficiency and independence, and supporting media self-regulation.

The action “Protecting Freedom of Expression and of the Media in Albania” is part of the joint European Union and the Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye 2023-2026”.
