Information technology being introduced in prisons in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Prison authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina have commissioned the introduction of information technologies in prisons, in light of previous Council of Europe recommendations. Support to the authorities in this regard was provided by the joint European Union/Council of Europe action "Strengthening human rights treatment of detained persons based on European standards and best practices in Bosnia and Herzegovina”.

The Working group, comprising prison professionals and local consultants, had an online co-ordination meeting with the action team on 21 July 2020, to discuss the current state of play as regards setting up information technology in entity prisons and the purchase of the hardware necessary for establishing an Integrated Prison Management Information System in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Working group also discussed the development of prison software, which will include three modules. At present, the treatment module is in the final phase of development and the security module is in a process of adjustments and consultations. A module on prison health care will be developed next month.

This activity is organised as part of the action on "Strengthening human rights treatment of detained persons based on European standards and best practices in Bosnia and Herzegovina”, which is a part of the joint European Union/Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022”. All activities within this action are currently taking place online.
