Round table on revisions of the Criminal Procedure Code took place in Montenegro

A round table was organised in Petrovac with the aim to finalise the draft amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code and further align them with the EU legislation (transposition of EU directives), and the relevant case law of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) concerning procedural rights.

The round table is a follow up to the public debate organised in August 2022 to discuss the draft amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code prepared by the working group which is chaired by the Ministry of Justice. The comments to the draft amendments received during the public debate were collected and presented at the round table, thus ensuring that all suggestions are taken into consideration, and, where relevant, incorporated in the draft amendments.

In addition to the representatives of the Ministry of Justice, the round table also gathered representatives of courts, prosecution, National Agent before the ECtHR, Ombudsperson, European Union and Council of Europe. It is expected that by the end of 2022, the draft amendments will be submitted for further adoption procedure.

The event was organised within the framework of the action "Improved procedural safeguards in judicial proceedings in Montenegro", which is a part of the joint European Union and Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022”.
