Fourth training on protection of journalists for judges and prosecutors in Serbia

The European standards on freedom of expression and safety of journalists can be more effectively implemented by offering training in this field to different local actors such as judges and prosecutors who could then apply these standards in their current or future work.

With the aim to contribute the creation of a favourable environment to exercising freedom of expression and freedom of the media at domestic level, Council of Europe and Judicial Academy of Serbia are organising trainings that promote European standards in this field and tackle topics such as problems encountered by journalists in practice, protection of sources and whistleblowers, positive obligations of the State, avoiding and ending impunity for acts against journalists, and recommendations on the protection of journalists and other media actors.

The fourth training on “Protection and safety of journalists” was held on 2-3 December 2021 with use of interactive methodology, many relevant publications available in Serbian and presentation of relevant case-law of the European Court of Human Rights. All sessions enabled active involvement and exchange of all participants and lecturers.

This training was organised under the framework of the action “Freedom of expression and freedom of the media in Serbia (JUFREX)”, implemented within the joint European Union and the Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022".
