Tunisia launches its national anti-trafficking authority

A significant milestone in the cooperation with Tunisia was reached with the launching of the Tunisian national authority against trafficking in human beings by the Minister of Justice, Mr Ghazi Jeribi, at a conference organised by the Council of Europe jointly with the Ministry on 8-9 February 2017 in Tunis. The appointment of the president of the institution and its 16 members were also made official in the presence of 120 participants including government officials, parliamentarians, international experts, representatives of diplomatic missions and international organisations, the media, civil society and academic bodies.

During the conference, participants were brought to examine the challenges associated with the introduction of the counter-trafficking law and the work of the newly established authority. Through exposure to the experiences of some CoE member states, discussions were stimulated as to the steps needed to consolidate the functioning of the anti-trafficking authority.  The programme also included the delivery of the first training module related to international and Tunisian legal framework, as well as the conceptualization of trafficking in human beings, to the appointed members of the authority.

The institutionalisation of an anti-trafficking body comes as a result of Council of Europe's series of awareness-raising conferences organised since 2015, support in the drafting of the anti-trafficking Organic Law 2016-61, as well as the various round-table discussions with relevant ministries and international actors working in the field of human trafficking. Another significant product of this conducive environment unfolds Tunisia’s interest in ratifying the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings, as officially announced by the Minister of Justice in January 2017.
