Meeting of the working group on conventions, 22 November 2017, Tunis

Marking three years of successful cooperation under the South Programme II, representatives of Tunisian authorities, the Council of Europe and the European Union held the third and final meeting of the Tunisian Bilateral Steering Committee on 21 November 2017 in Tunis, Tunisia.

The Steering Committee reviewed the progress of work undertaken since 2015 along the lines of the main themes of cooperation, namely the support to constitutional processes, new legal frameworks and the establishment of new democratic governance bodies; the prevention of corruption, money laundering and terrorism; the independence and efficiency of justice; the promotion of human rights, the rule of law and democracy through the Council of Europe’s networks and the consolidation of the common legal space between Tunisia and the Council of Europe

In particular, the partners welcomed the results achieved in the harmonisation of national legislation in line with European standards by highlighting Tunisia’s accession to the Council of Europe Convention 1081and its imminent membership to the Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) to mention but a few. Continued support towards this convergence of human rights, the rule of law and democratic standards was then discussed at a technical level on 22 November 2017.

Overall, the Steering Committee Meeting has also provided the opportunity to present the axes of future cooperation within the framework of the third edition of the South Programme and, more broadly, within the Council of Europe’s renewed partnership with Tunisia.
