Training of Trainers on the Implementation of the European Convention on Human Rights in Bulgaria

Yesterday, 26 April 2021, the Bulgarian legal experts from the JUSTROM pool of trainers have been trained on the topic the implementation of the European Convention on Human Rights Rights in Bulgaria. The keynote speaker of the event was the European Court of Human Rigths Judge Yonko Grozev. He outlined the main topics concerning human rights violations against Roma that were to be discussed during the Training of Trainers: police violence, violence by private parties, the right to respect for one’s home and hate speech and limits of freedom of expression. The participants had the opportunity to engage in a dialogue with Judge Grozev and to discuss the case-law concerning Roma and also women.

The participants discussed the cases concerning Roma and the right to life, the prohibition of inhuman or degrading treatment against Roma, but also the right to education cases. Further, the participants debated over the role of non-governmental organisations before the European Court of Human Rights in cases involving Roma. The process of implementation of the Court’s judgments was presented and more specifically, the general measures that can be applied for their execution.

In the next months, the participants will organise cascade trainings on similar topics for Bulgarian lawyers, prosecutors, judges or other representatives of public authorities.
