On 19-20 July 2017 the Council of Europe organized a two-day training seminar for advocates on Article 2 (Right to life) and Article 5 (Right to liberty and security) of the European Convention on Human Rights in Ganja city. The event was implemented in cooperation with the Academy of Justice and the Collegium of Advocates of Azerbaijan.
The two-day course was delivered by certified trainers of the Academy of Justice trained within the project and brought together 29 advocates practising in Ganja city and nearby regions (Gazakh, Tovuz, Tartar, Shamkir, Goygol, Agstafa and Goranboy).
During the seminar participants got familiarized with the main principles under the selected Articles of the European Court of Human Rights and based on the case-studies discussed state’s positive obligations to protect life, standards for lawfulness of detention and authorized deprivations of liberty, and guarantees for persons deprived of liberty.
Participants received the European Court of Human Rights related publications and materials recently published within the project. The publications were also delivered to Ganja Appeal Court and 5 first instance courts in Ganja city.
The activity was organized in the framework of the Council of Europe and European Union joint project “Application of the European Convention on Human Rights and the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights in Azerbaijan” under the Partnership for Good Governance for Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus.
As of today, 670 advocates, 279 judges of first instance and appeal courts and 79 practicing lawyers and human rights defenders have been trained on various European Convention on Human Rights standards as a result of a series of cascade training sessions organised within the project.
