Mentoring Sessions for Roma women in Italy

In October 2020 and January 2021, the JUSTROM Italy team held five mentoring sessions for young Roma women, in partnership with local Rome NGOs CRASFORM and Naturalmente Onlus. The purpose of the mentoring process was to support the empowerment of Roma women and to build their knowledge on legal instruments to sustain their claims for justice.

The first round of trainings was split in two different sessions, on 23 and 29 October 2020. The meetings were facilitated by JUSTROM Italy National Coordinator, Ms Maja Bova, jointly with the representatives of CRASFORM NGO, Ms Stefania Fadda, and of Naturalmente Onlus, Mr Vito Savasta. Guest-speakers for this event included JUSTROM Trainer, Mr. Paolo Farci and JUSTROM consultants Ms Giulia Perin, Ms Susanna Matonti, Mr Valerio Maione, Ms Argentina Dragutinovic, Ms Saska Jovanovic and Ms Rachele Gianfagna.

The first mentoring session addressed various subjects of interest for the Roma community, such as Roma history, based on the Roma History Factsheets created by the Council of Europe (which can be found here: Roma history factsheets), statelessness, citizenship, residence, regularisation, and the importance of gendered mediation. During the following mentoring session, the participants were assisted by the mentors to prepare factsheets concerning the above-mentioned issues for later dissemination among their peers and on social media.

The second round of trainings was composed of three meetings conducted between 27 and 29 January 2021. The subjects discussed were stay permits, de facto statelessness, violence against women, trafficking in human beings, and the distinction between child, early and forced marriage.

The participants in the five mentoring sessions were 10 young Roma women, all of them deeply committed and motivated individuals. Following-up on the mentoring process, the Roma women started preparing and organising outreach activities to get actively engaged in sharing their knowledge with the other members of the Roma community.
