Judges, prosecutors and judicial staff of the Republic of Moldova trained on non-discrimination and equality

Two set of training courses on non-discrimination and equality, held on 28-30 March in Chisinau, gathered a mixed group of judges, prosecutors, clerks and judicial assistants.

The courses were designed to equip participants with new abilities and skills for examining discrimination cases and better understanding the principle of non-discrimination and equality in their line of work.

The topics discussed included: the concept, forms and protected grounds of discrimination from the perspective of the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Social Charter, as well as national legislation and practice in this field. The participants got acquainted with the reversed burden of proof in discrimination cases,discrimination on ground of sex and discrimination on ground of Roma ethnicity, amongst other subjects.

A separate session was dedicated to the presentation of the activity of the Council for Prevention and Elimination Discrimination and Ensuring Equality of Moldova, a body that plays a vital role in this field.

Both events were organised in cooperation with the Moldovan National Institute of Justice, within the joint European Union-Council of Europe project "Supporting national efforts for prevention and combating discrimination in Moldova", part of the Partnership for Good Governance programme.
