Building capacities of education advisors in North Macedonia on child trafficking

Forty-nine education advisors from the Bureau for Development of Education in North Macedonia gained expertise on preventing and detecting child trafficking during two training sessions. The participants learned about risk factors for child trafficking, vulnerability of children and indicators of child trafficking, gender dimension in child trafficking, role of the school in preventing and combating child trafficking, child-sensitive communication and referral of potential victims to competent services.

During the training sessions the advisors were engaged in studying real child trafficking cases and hearing fictitious child victims. They increased their skills to proactively detect and refer child potential victims of trafficking. The use of Internet by traffickers for recruitment of children for different purposes of exploitation was also addressed as a topic.

Svetlana Cvetkovska, Head of the National Anti-trafficking Commission’s Sub-Group on Child Trafficking acknowledged the need and added value of such trainings with education professionals since the identified victims of trafficking in the country are mostly children. In fact, according to official figures for 2019, 4 out of 6 identified victims of trafficking were children.

Julija Trajanoska, member of the National Anti-trafficking Commission, shared her expectation that the trained advisors would further cascade trainings on preventing and combating child trafficking to teachers and others in schools in North Macedonia.

It was agreed with the Bureau for Development of Education that the trained advisors will start delivering capacity-building sessions to teachers in primary and secondary schools as  from 2021.

The two online trainings were organised from 30 November to 2 December and from 14 December to 16 December 2020 by the action “Preventing and combating trafficking in human beings in North Macedonia”, in co-operation with the Bureau for Development of Education and civil society organisations “For Happy Childhood” and “ASTRA-Serbia”.

The action “Preventing and combating human trafficking in North Macedonia” is implemented under the joint European Union / Council of Europe programme "Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022”.
