Students and teachers from 14 pilot schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina gather to discuss the importance of democratic school culture

During the four days of the Summer school on the Competences for Democratic Culture held between 24 and 27 August in Jahorina more than 80 students and 30 teachers from pilot schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) participated in workshops to discuss the topic of values and meaningful participation as part of improving democratic culture in the school environment.

The discussions we had were very interesting and useful for us! We talked about many issues important to us not only as students, but as active citizens in our society. Also, we learned more about democratic values and how to think critically in our school education and everyday life”, said Bruno Ćorluka from the secondary school “Antun Branko Šimić” in Grude. The workshops focused on practical examples where students and teachers explored different topics ranging from social media and mental health during the pandemic to the quality of education and inclusiveness.

The summer school was organised as part of the joint European Union and Council of Europe “Quality education for all” action implemented in 29 pilot schools across BiH. “I see this project as a new wave in our country which will help us, the young generations, to advance”, said Lea Lukić, a student from the secondary school in Prijedor.

In the closing sessions, the teachers and students were able to share their perspectives and ideas. They agreed that schools should primarily be a safe place where children can freely express their needs and that mutual respect and understanding is key for fostering an inclusive and democratic school environment. The summer school was an opportunity for participants of 14 secondary schools from different parts of the country including Brčko District, Republika Srpska and the cantons of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina to share their best practices and explore new models of student participation.

The action “Quality education for all” is a part of the joint European Union and the Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022”, implemented by the Council of Europe.
