MPs of Southern Mediterranean partners discuss the role of diaspora in building inclusive societies

Representatives of the parliaments of Algeria, Lebanon, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia and Palestine* joined members of European parliaments (MP) in the launching of the Parliamentary Network on Diaspora Policies organised by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on 7-8 September 2017 in Lisbon. The launching conference was marked by PACE’s proclamation of 8 September as the European Day of Diaspora.

The Parliamentary Network is intended to advance policy and legislative reforms related to diaspora’s role in the countries of origin and host societies. As such, the network will bring together parliamentarians from countries of origins a nd host countries together with representatives of diaspora organisations for a political dialogue, exchanges of information and good practices in the promotion of the role of diasporas in migrant integration. The agenda of the conference was focused on the analysis of diaspora’s contribution to European societies, to the development of the countries of origin as well as its role in building cohesive societies. The event was concluded with an agreement on the prioritised activities of the Network, including but not limited to strengthening MPs’ capacities to “address the needs of diaspora community and build inclusive societies”.
