International conference on transnational organised crime and terrorism

The Council of Europe “International Conference on Terrorism and Organised Crime” held on 21-22 September in Malaga (Spain) brought together Algerian, Jordanian, Israeli and Moroccan officials with representatives of member States’ authorities, international organisations and policy-makers for a discussion of effective responses to transnational organised crime and terrorism.

The various sessions of the conference have allowed participants to examine and reflect on the multifaceted features of the crime-terror nexus, underlining the magnitude and diversity of challenges facing states. Most importantly, the event has provided a platform for coordination, sharing of lessons, knowledge, and experience on practical approaches to prevent, investigate and prosecute such crimes. A call for strengthened international cooperation was highlighted in the operational conclusions of the conference along with concrete measures such as “the need to develop and implement appropriate, specialized investigative tools capable of coping with the evolution in criminal conduct, particularly criminals adopting newly developed technology.”
