Examining the role of Ombudsmen institutions in ensuring the rights of migrants

The 8th training session of the Association of Mediterranean Ombudsmen (AOM) was held on 18 - 19 October 2017 in Casablanca. Jointly organised with the Mediator of the Kingdom of Morocco, the seminar mobilised experts from the Venice Commission, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration to provide the AOM member institutions an in-depth overview what it takes to effectively carry out their responsibilities for ensuring the protection of migrants in their journey.

Over the course of two days, the 26 collaborators of the AOM member institutions from countries including Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia, examined the protection of migrants under international law, the nature of duty and obligations of security forces and the Ombudsman’s role in safeguarding the rights of migrants from the moment they enter into the territory to the moment of returns and readmissions.
