Closing of the ROMACTED local launching events in Albania

On 7 May the last local launching event was organised in Elbasan, in the framework of the joint European Union/Council of Europe programme “ROMACTED: Promoting good governance and Roma empowerment at local level”. This was the seventh activity marking the finalization of the successful tournament of local events in the partner municipalities of Vlora, Roskovec, Fier, Permet, Korca, Pogradec and Elbasan.

The local launching activities were held during April-May 2018 and aimed at promoting the importance of the empowerment of the Roma communities with a view to mainstreaming Roma inclusion within each of the participating municipalities; commemorating 8 April, International Roma Day, and 6 May (Erdelezi), and celebrating Romani culture and promoting the artistic skills of Roma youth.

The event in Elbasan was addressed by Claus Neukirch, Head of the Council of Europe in Tirana, Klevis Xhoxhi – Deputy Mayor of Municipality of Elbasan, Orsiola Kurti – ROMACTED Project Officer and Bledar Taho – ROMACTED Focal Point.

The artistic team of young Roma talents of Institute of Romani Culture in Albania (IRCA), the support organisation of the programme, demonstrated their art skills through the performance of the “Wooden Dish” drama authored by Edmund Morris, and directed by Marjus Veizi. Certificates were awarded to each of the young talented performers in recognition of their successful artistic performance of the “Wooden Dish” drama in the seven municipalities.

The launching activities in Permet, Korca and Pogradec were organised in the period from 23 to 25 April and put emphasis at an inclusive society and integration of Roma and Egyptian minorities through art and culture. The events were addressed by Claus Neukirch, Head of the Council of Europe in Tirana, Bekim Murati, General Director of the Agency for the Support of Local Self-Government, Niko Shupuli, Mayor of Municipality of Permet, Sotiraq Filo, Mayor of Municipality of Korca, Avdulla Cano, Deputy Mayor of Municipality of Pogradec, Orsiola Kurti – ROMACTED Project Officer and Bledar Taho – ROMACTED Focal Point. Invited guest speakers, recalled on the expected contribution of the ROMACTED Programme in these three municipalities and the necessity of similar activities, in order to promote social inclusion without discrimination at local level.

From 4 to 5 April the local launching events were organised in the municipalities of Vlora, Roskovec and Fier and  aimed at celebrating and promoting the Romani culture and the artistic skills of Roma ahead of the 8th of April, International Roma Day, as well as at raising awareness on issues and problems that Roma face in the Albanian context.

The events were addressed by Claus Neukirch, Head of the Council of Europe in Tirana, Dritan Leli, Mayor of Municipality of Vlora, Majlinda Bufi, Mayor of Municipality of Roskovec, Gentjana Cakrani, Deputy Mayor of Municipality of Fier, as well as Alessandro Angius, Human Rights Task Manager at European Union Delegation to Albania, Merita Xhafaj, General Director at the Ministry of Health and Social Protection and Bekim Murati, General Director of the Agency for the Support of Local Self-Government, who reiterated on the importance of the empowerment of the Roma communities with a view to mainstreaming Roma inclusion within each of the participating municipalities of the ROMACTED Programme in Albania.
