Launching Conference of the ROMACTED Programme in Turkey

The Turkish Union of Municipalities is organising the Launching Conference of the Joint CoE/EU Programme ROMACTED “Promoting good governance and Roma empowerment at local level” on 12 December 2018 at 09.30 a.m. at the Green Park Ankara Hotel in Ankara, with the support of the ROMACTED Team in Strasbourg. A press meeting over breakfast will take place immediately prior to the opening of the conference from 08.45 a.m. until 09.30 a.m.

It is foreseen that the conference is addressed by Michael INGLEDOW, Head of the Council of Europe Programme Office in Turkey, H.E. Christian BERGER, Ambassador of the European Union Delegation to Turkey, Fatma ŞAHİN, President of the Turkish Union of Municipalities / Mayor of Gaziantep, and Zehra Zümrüt SELÇUK, Minister of Family, Labour and Social Services.

A tripartite Memoranda of Understanding on the implementation of the ROMACTED Programme in Turkey will be signed by the Turkish Union of Municipalities, the Council of Europe, and senior representatives of the six participating municipalities, namely Edirne, Canik, Karadeniz-Eregli, Konak, Pendik and Sisli.

The launching conference will be preceded by the National Workshop on Participatory Local Strategic Planning, which aims to train the delegated contact points from the municipalities, potential members from Roma communities and other relevant local stakeholders on the ROMACTED methodology.

The ROMACTED Programme is aimed at building up the political will and sustained policy engagement of local authorities to enhance democratic local governance and empowerment of local Roma communities. The programme is implemented by the Council of Europe’s Roma and Travellers Team together with the Office of the Directorate General of Programmes and targets over 50 municipalities in seven beneficiaries in the Western Balkans and Turkey.
