International Roma Day marked in Bosnia and Herzegovina

On International Roma Day, the ROMACTED II Programme in Bosnia and Herzegovina organised several events in cooperation and partnership with local and central levels, acknowledging the Roma's rich culture, language, and heritage in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This year, the main message focused on education being the key to better and broader Roma inclusion.

The Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees, the Council of Europe’s partner through the ROMACTED programme, organised the main event in the BiH parliamentary assembly, gathering together government officials and the international community. The Head of the Council of Europe Office in BiH, Ms Bojana Urumova, addressed those present highlighting that education and better knowledge of the history of the Roma community are crucial for their inclusion. "The importance of this nation and its contribution to European and world culture should not be underestimated. The affirmation of this culture is very significant," said Urumova.

In all 12 ROMACTED Programme municipalities, various events were conducted, such as cultural events, round tables, theatre plays, and the displaying of Roma flags on municipal buildings. The Romani women's network "Uspjeh" organised an event focused on the retrospective of the position of Roma men and women and the achievements through joint action and cooperation of the Roma community through Roma civil society organisations and government and international institutions, with particular emphasis on the contribution of the ROMACTED Programme through their activities in the field.

The ROMACTED support organisation, in synergy with the ROMACTED partner "Cultural Center of Roma," organised a round table on preserving, nurturing, and promoting Roma culture and tradition. Special attention was paid to the importance and preservation of the Romani language. The message arising from the discussions was that including the Romani language, with elements of national culture, in the school curriculum is one of the main points that the Roma are advocating for. "We want to introduce the preservation of the Romani language with elements of national culture into the system" were the words from the ROMACTED Focal Point Mr Nedzad Jusic.
