Portugal: “Safeguarding children and young people: ensuring a healthy, safe, and positive sports environment”

A high-level event organised by the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth - the Portuguese national coordinator for the “Child Safeguarding in Sport” (CSIS) project - took place on 10 February 2022.

The event was organised in hybrid format (Lisbon/online) and brought together over 170 participants, including representatives from the Council of Europe, Safe Sport International, NSPCC - Child Protection in Sport Unit, national stakeholders who had participated in the development of the roadmap as well as key actors from the child protection and sports sectors. The event was web-streamed, and it reached more than 2 000 viewers.

The programme sessions focused on impacts and lessons learned from policy implementation, a presentation of the roadmap and discussions on its implementation.

Ms Sophie Kwasny, Head of the Council of Europe’s Sport Division noted that by committing to join and contribute to the CSIS project, Portugal, together with other CSIS partner countries, had started a journey towards the development and implementation of a comprehensive child safeguarding in sport policy, including the concrete measure of setting up Child Safeguarding Officer positions. She welcomed the aims and actions planned for further advancing this journey, emphasising that for its fully effective implementation, the long-term commitment and action of the Steering Committee was needed, as well as the development of new partnerships to further strengthen child safeguarding in sport.
