The EU Delegation and the Council of Europe present joint projects for Azerbaijan for 2019-2021 under the second phase of the Partnership for Good Governance

On Thursday, 3 October, the Delegation of the European Union and the Council of Europe presented new joint projects to be carried out in Azerbaijan under the second phase of the joint Partnership for Good Governance (PGGII) programme. The presentation was part of the first Local Steering Committee meeting after the launch of the programme in May this year.

Two country-specific projects will be implemented in Azerbaijan in 2019-2021, aiming at assisting Azerbaijani authorities with further strengthening institutional capacities to fight and prevent corruption, as well as supporting the judicial reform, enhancing the independence and professionalism of the judiciary, supporting the criminal justice reform and harmonising the application of the relevant Council of Europe standards in Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan is also taking part in three PGG regional projects aimed at fighting economic crimes, combatting discrimination and facilitating access of women to justice.

Fight against money laundering

The MONEYVAL committee of experts evaluates the effectiveness of domestic measures to counter money laundering and the financing of terrorism in Council of Europe member states which are not members of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). Council of Europe member states which are members of MONEYVAL but subsequently become members of the FATF can elect to retain full membership of MONEYVAL. Applicant states for membership and other non-member states which are not members of the FATF may apply to join the terms of reference under certain conditions.
