Trainers of the Justice Academy, School of Advocates and Educational Complex of the Police enhanced their knowledge and skills on the new criminal legislation of Armenia

First three-day training of trainers (ToT) on “Selected issues of new Criminal Code of Armenia” was organised for trainers on 1-3 October and second three-day ToT on “Selected issues of new Criminal Procedure Code of Armenia” was organised for another group of trainers on 8-10 October in Aghveran, Armenia. These were the first ToTs held after the adoption of the new Criminal Code in May and new Criminal Procedure Code in June 2021.

At the first ToT, the participants learnt about the conceptual novelties of the new Criminal Code, its principles and retrospectivity, as well as circumstances excluding responsibility and subject of crime and its complicity. The ToT was continued with discussions on systems of punishments, sentencing, grounds for release from criminal liability and punishment, crimes against property and the person, as well as novelties regarding the crimes against military and public services.

During the second ToT, the participants learnt about the principles of the criminal proceedings, public and private participants in the proceedings, evidence and proving, compulsory measures such as arrest, detention, house arrest and administrative supervision, as well as initiation of the criminal proceedings. It was also devoted to the discussions on public criminal prosecution, undercover investigative actions, judicial safeguards of the pre-trial proceedings, judicial review, as well as certain types of court hearings and proceedings.

In addition, the trainers were equipped with tools and techniques essential for delivery of high-quality trainings on criminal justice and were guided to link the newly acquired knowledge with their practical experience and skills.

These activities were organised in cooperation with the Justice Academy within the framework of the Project “Supporting the criminal justice reform and harmonising the application of the European standards in Armenia" , funded by the European Union and Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe in their Partnership for Good Governance II.
